There was a comment in an earlier Oppo post that mentioned how bad they thought it was once they saw a knee on the near side of the cockpit bulkhead in the footage.   I never went back to watch it again.

Now I’m glad I didn’t. This is terrible.

I saw that comment and watched it again. I just assumed that his leg wash pushed back by the pedal box moving backward. I also assumed fractures, but nothing like this. Were these cars not crash tested by the FIA? It was a big hit, but we’ve seen similar crashes in bigger cars.

I’m kind of wondering the same thing. It’s a lower cost championship, but the monocoque is still CF and built to comply with FIA regulations with anti-intrusion panels. It’s a massive impact, but I hope that the FIA are looking at that monocoque to see if it had prior damage and can find a way to make them safer if the structural failure was entirely due to the accident as opposed to because of a crack from a previous incident.

The nose and monocoque would have been lab tested but a few inches or degrees off and the way the structure reacts to the forces can change big time. It’s possible he hit in just the right way that the main impact structure was deflected instead of crushed. Looking at the video again it looks like he hit slightly left of center of the car ahead with a leftward yaw to his vehicle. The impact absorbing crash structure hit the left rear of the suspension but it looks like most of the force was from the transmission hitting the side of the monocoque around the front mounting points to the front suspension. Then the forces naturally led to everything being pushed back and to the left. Based on the way the steering column was pushed back and how the cars stayed linked together I would say that the transmission of the car that was hit was inside the pedal box.
